Ketamine vs. MDMA for PTSD Treatment: Insights and Comparisons (Published Study)

Rapid and sustained reduction of treatment-resistant PTSD symptoms after intravenous ketamine in a real-world, psychedelic paradigm

We are excited to announce a major milestone: the publication of our groundbreaking study in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, which details the efficacy of ketamine in treating PTSD. This pivotal research forms the basis of our recent webinar, where Dr. Steven Radowitz provided a comprehensive overview of the findings and their implications for mental health treatment.

In recent years, the conversation surrounding treatment options for PTSD has expanded significantly, particularly with ketamine and MDMA, which have gained attention for their potential to alleviate symptoms in individuals who have not responded to traditional treatments.

Understanding Ketamine Therapy: Safety & Uses

Ketamine therapy has its roots in the 1960s as an anesthetic agent. Its safety profile is notable; it does not significantly affect respiratory drive or cardiac function, making it a unique option in mood disorder treatments. Over time, research has revealed that ketamine can be particularly effective for treatment-resistant mood disorders, including major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and certain types of addiction.

At Nushama, ketamine is administered in a controlled setting. The therapy involves the use of intravenous (IV) ketamine at sub-anesthetic doses, which allows for a dissociative experience that can aid individuals in reframing their perspectives on trauma and emotional pain.

Indications for Use

  • Major Depressive Disorder
  • General Anxiety Disorder
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Substance Use Disorders
  • Eating Disorders

In this study, we explored ketamine’s efficacy for treating PTSD within a “modern psychedelic paradigm” — meaning, within the comfortable setting of a wellness location like Nushama, with the support of preparation and integration.

The Role of Preparation and Integration Therapy – The Set in Set & Setting

Set and setting are key aspects of a psychedelic experience; set refers to mindset; these factors are also related to the preparation and integration components of psychedelic-assisted therapy.

Preparation and integration are critical components of the ketamine therapy process – they’re the set. Preparation helps individuals set intentions and feel safe before the experience, while integration sessions afterward help them process and apply their experiences to everyday life. This holistic approach enhances the therapeutic benefits of ketamine, ensuring that participants can incorporate insights gained during their sessions into their ongoing journey toward healing.

Integration therapy plays a vital role in both ketamine and MDMA treatments. Participants benefit from ongoing support through group sessions and individual therapy, which helps them process their experiences and maintain the progress they have made. This ongoing care is essential for ensuring long-term success and personal growth following treatment.

Understanding MDMA: An Emerging but Not Yet Legal Treatment Option

MDMA promotes emotional openness and empathy, showing promise for PTSD treatment but remains illegal for general medical use pending further FDA approval. This restricts its availability and poses challenges for those seeking alternatives to traditional treatments. Unlike MDMA, ketamine’s legal status allows for immediate, regulated use in clinical settings, providing a safe and structured environment for managing severe symptoms.

Comparing Treatment Protocols (MDMA vs Ketamine)

The treatment protocols for ketamine and MDMA differ significantly. Ketamine therapy typically involves six sessions over three weeks, while MDMA therapy, as demonstrated in recent studies, often comprises three sessions spaced a month apart. The duration of effects also varies; MDMA’s effects can last for several hours, while ketamine has a shorter duration of action.

Cost & Legal Considerations
The financial aspect of these treatments is an essential factor for many individuals. Currently, ketamine therapy at Nushama costs approximately $4,800 for the complete protocol, while the expected cost of MDMA treatment could be significantly higher (and only available where legal), potentially reaching $24,000 for a series of sessions based on preliminary figures from Australia.

Safety Profile and Contraindications
Both ketamine and MDMA are considered relatively safe when administered in controlled settings. However, they have different safety profiles. MDMA can increase heart rate and blood pressure, posing risks for individuals with underlying heart conditions. Additionally, MDMA interacts negatively with certain medications, particularly serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which can lead to serotonin syndrome. In contrast, ketamine can be used alongside many psychiatric medications, making it a more flexible option for those currently undergoing treatment.

Research and Findings

Recent studies, Nushama’s recently published one, have provided valuable insights into the effectiveness of IV ketamine for PTSD. Our study involved 117 participants and revealed that approximately 75% experienced significant reductions in PTSD scores, with 62% achieving complete remission. These results highlight the potential of ketamine as a viable treatment option for individuals who have not found relief through traditional therapies.

MDMA Research Comparisons

Comparatively, MDMA has also shown promising results. In phase three trials conducted by MAPS, about 67% of participants reached full remission from PTSD symptoms after receiving MDMA-assisted therapy. The efficacy of both treatments underscores the growing recognition of psychedelics in mental health treatment. The problem with MDMA: it’s not legal in the US, and the road to legality has been fraught with difficulty.

As the legal landscape for psychedelic therapies evolves, ketamine stands out for its current availability and proven effectiveness in treating complex mental health conditions like PTSD. While MDMA has also proven to be effective, it’s not currently accessible in the US. Our commitment to utilizing legally sanctioned treatments like ketamine ensures that individuals receive safe, regulated, and effective care.

For anyone considering PTSD treatment options, it’s crucial to understand the legal status of potential therapies. If you or a loved one is curious about exploring ketamine treatment, contact us today.
