3 Ways to Mitigate the Risks of Ketamine

Ketamine is a powerful drug. It’s been used as an anesthetic for decades and is more recently used at lower doses to treat mood disorders like depression. All drugs come with risks, so it is only natural to wonder what makes ketamine therapy so safe at Nushama.

1. Administer Ketamine Under Medical Supervision

Ketamine addiction is rare, especially under a doctor’s supervision.

Daily users may suffer withdrawal symptoms such as shaking, sweating, and heart palpitations. They run the risk of developing ulcerative cystitis and neurocognitive impairment with long-term use.

Administering ketamine via IV infusion is the easiest way to control dosage. The dose our patients receive during sessions is too small, and the number of sessions far too low, to leave them with any withdrawal symptoms. We also have counselors to meet with patients before and after therapy to explicitly discuss addiction issues.

2. Control the “Set and Setting”

Some patients may experience what we call “challenging” journeys. But we do everything in our power to set our patients up for success.

The set and setting of your journey is controlled as much as possible. This includes carefully curated music, ambient lighting, eyeshades, comfortable seating, and more.

Our patients are carefully screened beforehand for any condition that would make ketamine psychedelic therapy inadvisable. Most importantly, integrating your experience afterward is a crucial part of the process. This ensures that anything upsetting that comes up during your journey is learned from and used to heal.

3. Work with Trained Professionals

The most important tool for mitigating the risks of ketamine at Nushama is our highly experienced staff. Board certified anesthesiologists administer the ketamine infusions. Qualified therapists help you get the most out of your experience. At Nushama, you are always in safe hands.
